The historical resort of Morzine is in a very special location in the Portes du Soleil. There are very few resorts in the Alps with such a short transfer time from major international airports and its location in the valley on the edge of huge mountains makes it a great place to stay especially if you love to ski from a traditional pretty French Savoie town.
The Portes Du Soleil ski area stretches a whopping 650 km across 13 different resorts both in France and Switzerland. The Morzine ski area is one of seven resorts on the French side including Avoriaz, Les Gets, Montriond, St Jean D’Aulps, Abondance and La Chapelle. Morzine is the largest resort and has a lively collection of bars and restaurants alongside the fantastic skiing it has on offer in the daytime.
Morzine is a year round resort with a fabulous ski terrain in the winter (Hiver) and one of the most popular mountain bike areas in Europe during the summer months (Eté)
Morzine has been a busy market town in the Alps for over 500 years and agriculture and mining gave way to tourism over the last 100 years, it has retained its original buildings and style despite growing into a modern and lively resort.
Tourism in Morzine is well catered for with a fantastic array of fabulous restaurants and bars, night skiing on the Pleney, firework displays, torchlight descents, carousels, boutique shops and live bands. There is also a large gym and swimming pool, national ice hockey rink, spa, riverside hikes, paracending, snowshoe walks and skidoo hire are always most popular.
For intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders this vast ski domain can offer something new every day. With 12 distinct resorts accessed within the Portes du Soleil, the sense of travel is fantastic and along with endless varied terrain and top snowparks and the choice is easy. Strong intermediates will want to graduate quickly upwards from Morzine to Avoriaz and the much more demanding runs that stretch back down, as well as across the Swiss border.
If you are not a dedicated skier or snowboarder, this is one of those destinations where there is a reasonable amount of other activities to fill the hours while your companions are whizzing down the mountain. These include ice-diving beneath a lake, nature discovery tours, snowmobiling, tobogganing, snowshoeing and shopping. There is also a world-class ice rink and a large swimming pool
There is no shortage of places in Morzine to go for a drink or two but each bar offers something unique. From amazing apres ski spots to late night venues, there is something for everyone.
Morzine was originally a traditional Savoyard working village and whilst it has retained much of its charm and character, it now provides its visitors with modern leisure facilities and an increasing number of boutique shops. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with plenty going on and all just over an hour from Geneva airport.
It’s not all about the skiing and boarding. Morzine Ski Resort has plenty more on offer on and off the mountain. Some of our favourite Winter Activities in this great resort are:
