Everyone wants ski-in ski-out chalets. We have been operating catered ski chalet holidays for 20 years now from resorts in France and we have watched ski resorts grow before our eyes. In the 60's and 70's huge, and sometimes pretty ugly tower blocks were built with hundreds of studio apartments and you can still see these concrete jungles in most major ski resorts including Val Thorens, Flaine, Tignes, Les Arcs and La Plagne.
Today if you search carefully, there are still affordable, pretty chalets to be found, but the bigger the resort, the more likely ski-in ski-out chalets are going to be very expensive. It’s worth spending a little time looking for those hidden gems.
Everyone asks for ski-in ski-out but it comes with a warning! There is a direct link between property prices and the proximity of a ski property (ski holiday) to the slopes. Property prices are as high as London city centre and that means higher mortgages which in turn, of course, means more expensive ski holiday accommodation.
We handle hundreds of enquiries for ski holidays each year and believe the most common and important factors when enquiring about a chalet holiday are as follows:
Most people want the biggest ski areas and something for all abilities. We know that The Three Valleys is by far the largest ski area and many of our guests ask for this.
Get above the snowline….stay high up and if you are lower than you would like to be, make sure you are close to the lifts or you will feel like you are in the UK on a winters day. North facing resorts hold the snow longer and stay colder, so the snowfall hovers around substantially longer when it gets warmer than on other slopes facing the sun.
Everyone wants ski-in ski-out chalets but hold on a minute! Is this the best choice for beginners? Or for access to the town for apres ski and a wonder around the shops? By nature ski-in ski-out means the property is surrounded by snow but pause here: the closer the property is to the slopes, the higher the sales value of the property and the higher the cost, so expect to pay mega premiums for ski-in ski-out chalet holidays.
Nobody wants long transfers but by nature airports need to be 2-3 hours away from the mountains to avoid the bad weather that makes the white stuff fall. Anything close to the airport is likely to be lower altitude and hindered by rainfall and a risk of no snow.
The catered chalet is still very much in demand and since Brexit operators like ourselves have been finding cost effective ways to make a catered chalet holiday fall within the budget of the masses. It has required innovation, change and careful planning to create affordable products and it has been a challenge! Since Brexit it costs around €3k per month to employ a member of the team. Costs rising more than 300%. Food, energy and fuel have also risen substantially in France in the last 3 years. But a catered chalet means:
We all love dancing in our ski boots and some live music playing our favourite covers in the bars in the evening. In reality, we find many of our guests love the comfort of our chalets and get too comfy and definitely too tired to venture out more than once per week.
Well, it’s become a big favourite. A little decadence whilst on holiday.
