Located at the end of the Tarentaise valley, Tignes lies between 1,550m and 3,450m altitude as part of the Espace Killy, the ski area named after the spectacularly successful skier Jean-Claude Killy who was raised here. With the Grande Motte glacier, there is skiing from November right through till the Spring with skiing for all levels of skier or snowboarder. 57% of the slopes are easy runs so ideal for intermediates. However it is also considered a paradise for freeriding! Temperatures are regularly sub zero during the day and/or at night during the entire winter season, as well as in April. This maintains snow cover, even without new snowfalls. The snow is always there!
There are 5 villages in the Tignes area, the main resort of Tignes Le Lac sits at an altitude of 2100m while the lower villages boast altitudes of 1550m and 1850m. The old town of Tignes disappeared beneath the waters of the Lac du Chevril when the valley was dammed in 1952. The lake is drained every 10 years and it’s possible if lucky to see the remnants of the village when this happens. On the Val d'Isere end of the lake is the famous statue, ‘La Dame du Lac’ or The Lady of the Lake, erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary, however there is much more to her intriguing story in our blog here.
